Today we had a 11 kilometer walk in a nature reserve 15 kilometers from our village. It is wedged between the motorway Eindhoven-Nijmegen and the railway 's-Hertogenbosch-Nijmegen. The forest division tries to restore it to a more natural forest bij cutting a number of pines so that sunlight can reach the undergrow. Theye have put Highland cattle and Exmoor ponies in it. They hope that grazing will also give a more diverse nature.

Today in the Netherlands more the a million people took their annual Carnival Holliday. So there were long traffic jams. We decided to walk in an estate 30 kilometers south from our village.
Griendsveen has been named after the family van der Griendt. In the 19th century they started large scale peat digging in the moorlands on the border of the provinces Noord-Brabant and Limburg. They dug a complex system of canals for drainage and peat transport. Peat digging has stopped many decades ago. Betwee the villages Griendsveen ( Moor of van der Griendt) and Helenaveen ( Moor of Helena = wife of mr van der Griendt) is now a large nature reserve. The national forest department tries to reconstruct the conditions for new moor formation. We made a walk of 10 kilometers and the only living creatures we saw were geese, herons, ducks and deer. And we heared a woodpacker but could not find him. The traffic jams were only 5 kilometers away!

To improve my health I try to walk or bicycle for a hour everyday. Or listen to a CD on my home trainer. Today it was a cycle trip to a hamlet nearby ; Zevenhuizen. The translation would be " seven houses". Before WWII this area was a poor farming area. The EEC common agriculture policy made it rich trough large scale agriculture. (bio-industry) The old farmhouses are now much sought after for houses by city slickers. Zevenhuizen has many beuatiful restored farmhouses.
In recent years we had hog cholera ( or pigpest) foot and mouth disease and bird flu. Sanitation measurements made it necessary that agriculture has to be done on an even much bigger scale. Older farms are somes converted to campingsites or horse riding schools.
When I left our house the light was beautiful after a snow shower. But ithe weather changed quickly.
