The second Saturday is always nation wind- en watermill day and also national bicycle day. The weather was cold. So we went by car to the village Oploo. There are a windmill and a watermill. The watermill goes back to the 16th century. The present watermill dates from the 18th century. It was a combined cornmill, oilmill and barley hulling mill. Nearby is a postmill. It was placed there in the 18th century because there was not enough water in the mill brook during winter times.
We made te 8 kilometer millbrook walk.

National rememberance day in the Netherlands

Monument " Sporen van de oorlog" near Mill
Former railway bridge over the Defence canal
last part of the Peel-Raam defence line of 1940
Today is National Rememberance day in the Netherlands. At 8 p.m. is the annual two minutes silence for the victims of WWII and the susbequents wars. Many people go to WII rememberance monuments for this occasion.
Today I post some pictures of a small monument near the vilage of Mill. On May the 10th of 1940 a German armoured train was derailed here. The Germans captured the railway bridge near Gennip with the help of German soldiers in Dutch uniforms. After the bridge was secured they sent an armoured train in the Mill access. It crossed the bridges over the small stream Raam en the Defence canal. After the second railway bridge the train unloaded its troops. On the way back the train was dereailed. Many Dutch soldiers died here. For the German troops the road to Roterdam was free.

The village is a time capuse with a beautifull small museum with enthnografica. There are beautiful gardens and a meticulously kept steamengine. The mission houses are on the banks of the river Maas.

A very quiet corner of the Netherlands.
The software of the new camera gave a lot of trouble but everything is in working order now.

The Zaanse Schans is a sanctuary for wooden houses. In practice is a open air museum. It must be high on the Japense version of the Lobely Planet because touristbuses on the parking place have Japese texts.
I was at the adjecent museum for a meeting. The tourist buses skip the museum. That is wrong. A visit is highly recomended.
After the meeting we had a bicycle trip through Oosterzijderveld. It is now a bird sancutary. Allthough you are never more than 6 kilometers of high rising flatbuildings, very are many species of birds.

Today was a beautiful Spring day. We went on a bicycle tour of 50 kilometers in the Betuwe area. It is a fruit growing area on both sides of the small river Linge. Most trees were flowring Tomorrow is the annual Red Cross charity Blossom walk. There are expecting over 20000 walkers. The Dutch army was busy making pontoon briddges over the river Linge. A they put op tents for treatment of blisters and sore feet.
The last leg of the trip was a long the dike of the river Waal. This is the main tributary of the Rhine. Most shipping trafic from the Antwerp-Rotterdam range to the Ruhr area and beyond goes through this stretch of water. Altlough we were only a few miles from the main motorways and railways it was very quiet.
