a bicycle tour over the former island Walcheren. The most south-western part of the Netherlands. It is enclosed by dikes and dunes and attachted to other former islands by dams. Middelburg and Veere are beuatifull small towns. In many villages there were anual "ring-picking" contests. Men and woman on horses have a wooden lance. With this they trie in full galop to pick up a ring fixed to a rope. The use mainly haevy horses ( like English Shire horses).

A party of millers from sawmills, milwrights and windmill enthusiasts made a study of three of the five remain Paltrok wind sawmills. Two in the Zaan Area and one on the edge of the city centre of Amsterdam. It was a good windy dat. All mills were sawing a log. The oldest was the " Otter". The Amsterdam Paltrok of 1631. It was built by a monopolist windsaw company and was privatised in 1630. The mill is now " sufflocated" by the surrounding high risring flats. The Zaandam sawmill " De Held Jozua" ( Joshua the Hero) of 1719 will face the same fate. The wood drying shed houses a chinese restauarant. The paltrok " The Gekroonde Polenburg" of 1869 is now in the open air museum " Zaanse Schans. Constuction details differ between the mills. Some construction details go back construction details in wooden sailing ships. Amsterdam and Zaandam were in the 17th centry European centres of shipbuilding.

|
We stayed a few days at a camping on the coast of North Holland. North Holland is a sandy coastal strip with protects a large polderland.. From Roman times people cultivated the marshed and the first towns came. In the 16 th century it became a prosporous area with the " Golden Age" in the 17th century. We made nice bicycle trips.

Today we made a 63 kilomters bicyclte trip to the area west of our village. We croossed the stream Leigraaf and the small river aa. The Zuid Willemsvaart. A canal of 129 kilometers from 's-Hertogenbosch to Maastricht. It was built in the beginning of the 19th century and has been enlarged trice. After that we crossed the river Dommel. Later we croosed the waters again. It is mainly farmland with some small parts of nature reserves
