This country was originally the Dukedom of Gelre. The rivers were always strategic boudraries. So there were many castles and forts in the area

Sail Amsterdam started with the tall ship parade on the North Sea canal. This year 57 tall ships, 500 ships in the class of maritime heritage ( steam tugs, restored fishing ships, restored inland freighters and so) and a number of modern navy vessels went from Ymuiden to Amsterdam. They were met and accompnaied by thousands of pleasure boats. The ewather was fine. And the atmosphere was like a carnival. Some people would call it a chaos on water. But it was a wonderfull, maily self organising event.
